Saying “Though he’s never held public office, Walker wouldn’t have to do much to improve on Campfield: Sponsor sensible legislation and don’t embarrass constituents. Walker should do much more than that, however, and is by far the best choice for the seat.” the KNS whole heartedly endorsed Randy Walker for State Senate. “It is an honor to be recognized by the Knoxville News Sentinel and the Fraternal Order of Police, my lifelong commitment to helping law enforcement and enabling business development are things that I am very proud of. These types of endorsements from hometown newspapers and regular working people in District 7 are indicative of our grassroots campaign for the people”. Randy has worked in the transportation security area for the past 20 years and has been pivotal in bringing homeland security technology to local and state law enforcement. Other groups endorsing Randy Walker for State Senate are the Tennessee State Employees Association, Tennessee Education Association, Knox County Education Association, Tennessee Firefighters Association, Knox County Building Trades Association, Atomic Trades and Labor Council, Teamsters Local 519, Iron Workers Local 384 and the Tennessee AFL-CIO.

“My guess is that if there were not a D after Walker’s name that Haslam would endorse Walker because the two have much more in common than Haslam has in common with Campfield”. says Pam Strickland of the Knoxville New Sentinel. I think she captures the real issues in this election. Other excerpts from the article read “Walker, however, is the real deal.”
A 21-year employee of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Walker specializes in business creation on the job.
Off the job, he and his wife have been busy over the years in various aspects of youth sports, and the PTA, as well as the Optimist Club. Walker has a string of endorsements, and he wants to focus on jobs – not wingnut, ultraconservative, push-button nonsense that’s only going to make headlines and just die in committee the way Campfield’s bills do.

Yesterday Cindy, Christin and I had the opportunity to drop by Thompson Boling for UT Donor Appreciation Day Tailgate. We had our picture taken with Coach Summit and Chancellor Cheeks. Got to chat with Mike Hamilton and Bruce Pearl and had a BBQ dinner with Ron and Therese Leadbetter. Through our roughest financial times we have always given something to the University because we believe in it. My Father used to say “Why would you want to go somewhere out of state when you have the finest University in the country in your backyard”. I agree. This school is one of our precious resources in Knoxville and results in much of Knoxville’s economic growth as well as our cultural identity. The University of Tennessee and Knoxville are tied to one another. What’s good for one is good for the other and vice versa. As a State Senator for Knoxville I will always fight for the University of Tennessee and higher education. The Professors and young graduates that those professors help produce attract the kind of investment and innovation that Knoxville needs to prosper in these harsh economic times. With a rising senior at UT and a rising senior at ETSU you can count on me to be an advocate of higher education

Betty Bean recently attended the Magnolia Café Meet and Greet for Randy Walker and published an excellent article in the September 6, 2010 edition of Shopper News . The Link is: http://www.shoppernewsnow.com/aBean.aspx
Bean discussed bipartisan support that is building for Randy in his State Senate campaign.
Some excerpts from the article entitled Republicans for Randy include:
City Council member Daniel Brown introduced him as “a husband, a father, a church man who’s active in his community. He’s a good solid citizen. His opponent has been an embarrassment to this state and this city.”

When Walker spoke, he predicted that this election will “transcend party politics” and hammered on his themes of jobs, public safety and public education.
“I’m a family person. I’m a PTA person. I’m from here, not from New York. I have put deals together to bring businesses to the state of Tennessee.”

Bean also wrote about an interview she had with Randy at the event.
Two Saturdays ago, Walker spent the day calling Republicans. He worked from a targeted list and says the results were encouraging. “Eighty five percent of them were receptive,” he said. “A lot of people I left messages for called me back. Others sent word that they’d be voting for me.”

Some excerpts:

“…“I’m a business guy,” he told them. “I’m a no-nonsense guy and I do things in a businesslike way. We need to frame this argument – jobs, education (and) public safety.”

“I’m not in it to lose because Knox County can’t afford it. Tennessee can’t afford it. We can’t afford to be preaching ridiculous extreme right-wing ideas while our children are falling behind. Tennessee is in the lower 10 percentile of public schools. That is an issue that has got to be focused on…”

She goes on:

“…For the past 21 years Walker, who earned a bachelor’s degree in logistics and transportation from UT, has been a program manager and business developer at ORNL. He has also worked as a business developer, college instructor, operations manager, program manager and business entrepreneur. He has facilitated southeast regional homeland security weigh station demonstrations and serves on the Anti-Terrorism Advisory Committee for the U.S. Attorney of Northern Illinois, the DOE Contractors Transportation Management Association Board and the American National Standards Institute working group…”

“…We’ve got to focus on the real issues, not silly wedge issues like seceding from the union. … We’ve got to focus on jobs, education and public safety. It’s not fun and games here. We’re in serious times…”
